What do Luck and Taking Risk have in Common?
Last week I had such an invigorating discussion with Ken Rusk, who is a guest on one of my podcast episodes about luck.
Does pure luck really exist? Or is there more to being lucky in this world?
We talked a lot about the correlation between luck and risk - being lucky comes with taking risk.
Risk in taking action to something that is new, challenging or potentially frightening, like approaching someone you fancy. Or taking the leap of faith to change jobs or move countries.
Have you ever felt lucky in your life but not taken risk? Or put yourself in a situation that felt uncomfortable or unsettling?
Like getting your dream job, partner or a home you really desire comes with an element of risk. It’s only after the event that you say ‘Wow I was so lucky that I found that home’. But you had to put yourself in that situation to find it in the first place right? Or to meet that special person.
People have sometimes said to me you’re so lucky. But when I reflect on things that ‘luck’ has come with a certain degree of ‘risk’.
When I look at it, that luck came from a clarity in knowing what I wanted and going for it. By taking risks and putting myself in uncomfortable situations.
Like in taking risks in my life by moving countries, changing jobs and companies several times (it would’ve been easy to stay where I was), and most recently completely changing my career and going solo.
Where have you felt ‘lucky’ in your life? What seems to flow and go easily for you? Is is in your romantic life? With your career, managing your health? Did you take risks?
What’s an area that you wish you had more luck?
