Steps to Nailing the Interview Process
50% of nailing an interview is checking the capabilities box, but did you know that a big portion of getting your dream job is connecting and building rapport with your interviewers?
I’ve been speaking with several people this week about interviews - from first-stage interviews to internal interviews, and a common theme is coming up; how do you nail the interview process and get the job?
Interviewing is something I used to say that I loved and was really good at - It’s not because I have a high IQ (I’d argue I’m more EQ than IQ) but I genuinely LOVE connecting with people and being curious.
People buy from people they like, so building rapport and connection is critical to getting hired. Put yourself in their shoes; would you hire someone you didn’t quite gel with? Or you left the interview not quite being able to place your finger on why you’re unsure. It might be because you didn’t build a genuine connection with them where they felt a level of trust.
So here are 5 steps to building rapport:
Build rapport with your interviewers
Be curious about them - get to know them on a personal level once you’ve built some trust
Do your research on who they are and try to find common ground
Interview them too - ask relevant q’s and find out if they’re aligned to your values
Ask for feedback at the end and try to either ask about next steps or ‘why they wouldn’t hire you’
Have fun with the process!
Remember interviewers are human too and probably have to sit through many interviews, so try to make it fun and stand out!
