Did you know Imposter Syndrome, Perfectionism and Procrastination are all related?

Imposter Syndrome can be defined as overwhelming feelings of inadequacy, feeling like a fraud or not good enough. People often say they ‘don’t deserve their success’, and subsequently they feel convinced that they aren’t intelligent or capable of fulfilling a role and their duties. This can feel insurmountable and make people feel like they will be exposed or found out. Over time this leads to a downward spiral, which can lead to anxiety, fear and lacking in confidence.

Does this sound like you?

If you’re also naturally a perfectionist, you may also feel the need to excel at what you do, striving for perfection, but because you feel like you’re an ‘imposter’ you doubt yourself and therefore put things off, which is why there can be strong correlation between imposter syndrome and procrastination.

This downward spiral can lead to you doubting yourself and your confidence is hampered. Often this vicious circle leaves people questioning themselves and stuck in a never-ending rut, wondering how they can get out of this place of despair and able to step into a room with confidence and clarity.

If this sounds like you and you’ve experienced feeling like an ‘imposter’, or in a downward spiral of despair, below I outline a few tips to help you:

  1. Acknowledge your feelings and write them down

  2. Talk to someone, whether it’s a therapist, coach or close friend/relative

  3. Create a personal SWOT analysis

  4. Overcome perfectionism and your need to be ‘perfect’

  5. Accept praises and be willing to receive ‘thank you’

  6. Celebrate your successes
